Overflow-Water for Maasai
While on a missionary trip to Kenya in 2008, WSU President Nick Stanley saw firsthand the desperate need for safe drinking water while working alongside the people of Maasai Mara area of Kenya. Stanley made two more mission trips to the region in 2009. He, along with Kent Fillinger of Connection Pointe Christian Church and Christian Missionary Fellowship’s (CMF) Maasai team, became determined to combat contaminated drinking water—the major killer of young children in Kenya.
The main goal of “Overflow- Water for Maasai” is to reduce the number of water related illnesses by addressing the two major issues-the quantity and quality drinking water in the Maasai Mara area of Kenya. Since its inception in late 2008, Stanley has worked with Fillinger and the Maasai team to fund and hire a Kenyan Water Coordinator to maintain the equipment and community relations in the Maasai Mara area. This provides “sustainability” which many of the efforts in Kenya greatly need. The last mission trip demonstrated that we can disinfect contaminated water and make it safe through chlorination. Our plan is to begin with schools, clinics and churches in the Maasai area. Later this year, plans are to raise money for Rain Collection systems (quantity), and additional chlorination equipment (quality).
